Ten days of competitions, thirty sports disciplines, at least 10 thousand participants representing more than eighty nations and an economic impact for the territory estimated at 20 million euros: numbers that highlight the size and importance of an international event, the European Masters Games, whose organization has been assigned to the city of Mole for the edition scheduled from 26 July to 4 August 2019.
The format of the event is that of an Olympics reserved for over 35 athletes where, unlike the official five-circle games, it does not compete for its own flag, but only for themselves. The character of the European Masters Games is that of a real sporting party, whose rules provide that, as mentioned, each person can represent itself only, no competitions are allowed between nations or even professional teams. A single athlete who intends to participate in a team sport can however do so by joining a team made up of athletes of different nationalities and backgrounds, provided that all the members belong to the same age group.
In short, at the Games over 35 you go to compete and challenge each other fighting for the best possible result, as the rules of sport want, but the spirit that drives the comparison is not only competitive and the main goal is not the race for the medal most precious metal. To prevail in this competition is the climate of joy and friendship, of pleasure and fun and, far from irrelevant, participation in the Masters Games must also be an opportunity to discover, enjoy and appreciate how beautiful, and good , offers the host city.
The choice of the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) to assign to the Piedmontese capital the Games scheduled in 2019, confirms that Turin is the ideal stage for major sports events. “We welcomed the opportunity to host this event in our city in two years, also in consideration – underlines the Mayor Chiara Appendino – of the success obtained four years ago by the Turin edition of the World Masters Games, in which they took part 20 thousand athletes and an equal number of escorts.
To all those who decide to enroll in the games over 35 and to come to our city – and of course to the people who will accompany them – we are sure to offer, as well as an opportunity to try a sporting challenge, the opportunity to spend a pleasant stay in one of the richest cities of art and history in Europe.
Turin in fact – adds Chiara Appendino -, together with cutting-edge sports facilities and the important wealth of experience acquired in organizing large events, can include high-level hospitality infrastructures, culture, architectural treasures, museums, the green of large urban parks and, not least, the excellent traditional products of local food and wine “.
In Turin, sport is at home. “In the Piedmontese capital – recalls the commissioner Roberto Finardi – sport has always played a leading role and, in recent years, there have been few competitions that have chosen as their home the city of Mole: from the 2006 Winter Olympics at the World Fencing Championships, from the Snow Universiade to the indoor athletics European Championships, from the 2013 World Masters Games to the numerous international competitions on ice, parquet and in the pool.
“The EMGs – declares the Regional Councilor for Sport, Giovanni Maria Ferraris – are an important opportunity for the enhancement and promotion of the Piedmont area, not only from the sporting point of view, but also tourism and culture of our region. My hope is that we will be able to appreciate the remarkable regional plant heritage to athletes and enthusiasts, which I trust to be numerous from all over Italy and from the entire European continent “.
“Together with the City and the Piedmont Region, as Chamber of Commerce, we are pleased to make our contribution to the realization of this European event, which will bring here a large audience of athletes, escorts and supporters, dedicated to sport for all – comments Vincenzo Ilotte, president of the Turin Chamber of Commerce. – In the days of the event, we expect full hotels and a lot of movement in the city, thanks to over 20 thousand people expected. I remember that the 2013 World Master Games had recorded, according to the data of our Observatory, a + 195% of hotel revenues in the month of August, a period normally of low season for Turin “.
Among the sports present at the Games there will be athletics, basketball, canoeing, cycling, table tennis, baseball, handball, rowing, badminton, canoeing, triathlon, archery, taekwondo, judo, fencing, golf, swimming, water skiing , sailing and tennis. But those of the Masters Games will not be just ten days of sporting events because, between 26 July and 4 August 2019, a special program of shows and cultural initiatives is already planned in the city.
